Average 5K Times by Age and Gender
These averages are based on race result data from thousands of 5K events. They represent typical finish times for recreational runners who complete organized 5K races. If you are just starting out, expect to be slower than these averages initially. With consistent training over 8 to 12 weeks, most runners see significant improvement.

How to Use This 5K Calculator
This calculator covers every calculation a 5K runner might need, organized into six tabs. The Pace tab converts your 5K finish time into a per-mile or per-kilometer pace. The Time tab does the reverse, converting a target pace into a predicted finish time. The Calories tab estimates energy expenditure based on your body weight and running duration.
The Speed tab converts your 5K time into miles per hour and kilometers per hour, which is useful for treadmill settings or comparing to cycling and other sports. The Predict tab uses established race prediction formulas (Riegel and Cameron) to estimate your 5K time from a recent 1-mile or 10K result. The Zones tab generates training paces for interval sessions, tempo runs, easy runs, long runs, and recovery based on your 5K race time.

Make Every 5K Count for Something Bigger
You have your 5K pace dialed in. Now put it to work. Motera turns every run into a territory capture mission. Run loops around your neighborhood to claim land, compete on leaderboards, and explore your city through a Fog of War map. Your 5K becomes a strategy session.
Every kilometer you cover earns XP and pushes you up the ranks. Stop running circles for a stopwatch. Start running circles for territory.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to run a 5K?
The average 5K finish time is roughly 28 to 35 minutes for recreational runners. Beginners typically finish between 35 and 45 minutes. Competitive club runners often finish between 18 and 24 minutes. Elite runners can finish under 15 minutes. Your finish time depends on your fitness level, age, training background, and the course terrain.
How many calories does a 5K burn?
A 5K typically burns between 250 and 450 calories depending on your body weight and running pace. A general estimate is about 60 to 100 calories per mile. A 150-pound runner burns roughly 100 calories per mile, so a 5K (3.1 miles) would burn about 310 calories. Heavier runners burn more calories per mile because they move more body mass.
What is a good 5K time for a beginner?
A good beginner 5K time is anything under 40 minutes. Many first-time 5K runners finish between 30 and 40 minutes with a mix of running and walking. If you can run the entire distance without stopping, finishing under 35 minutes is a solid achievement for a new runner. Focus on completing the distance first, then work on improving your time.
How do I predict my 5K time from my mile time?
Multiply your mile time by about 3.35 to 3.5 to estimate your 5K time. For example, if you run a 7:00 mile, your predicted 5K time would be roughly 23:30 to 24:30. This uses the Riegel formula, which accounts for the natural slowdown that occurs as race distance increases. The prediction is most accurate if your mile time is from a recent all-out effort.
How many laps is a 5K on a track?
A 5K is 12.5 laps on a standard 400-meter outdoor track. Each lap is 400 meters, so 12 full laps equal 4,800 meters. You need an additional half lap (200 meters) to complete the full 5,000 meters. Most track 5K races start at the 200-meter mark on the track so runners finish at the standard finish line.
What is the world record 5K time?
The men's 5K world record is 12:35.36, set by Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda in 2020. The women's 5K world record is 14:00.21, set by Beatrice Chebet of Kenya in 2024. These times translate to roughly 4:03 and 4:30 per mile pace respectively, which is a speed most recreational runners can only sustain for a few hundred meters.
How accurate are 5K prediction calculators?
Prediction calculators are typically accurate within 1 to 3 percent for well-trained runners when predicting from a similar distance. Predictions from a mile time to 5K are quite reliable. Predictions become less accurate when your input race and target race are very different distances, or if you have not trained specifically for the target distance. Weather, terrain, and race-day conditions also affect accuracy.
What training paces should I use for a 5K?
For 5K training, your easy runs should be 60 to 90 seconds per mile slower than your 5K pace. Tempo runs should be about 15 to 20 seconds per mile slower than 5K pace. Interval sessions (400m or 800m repeats) should be at or slightly faster than 5K pace. Long runs should be at easy pace. About 80% of your weekly mileage should be at easy pace.
