How the Conversion Works

min/km to min/mile

One mile equals 1.60934 kilometers. So running 1 mile takes 1.60934 times as long as running 1 kilometer at the same speed.

min/mile = min/km x 1.60934

Example: 5:00/km = 300 sec x 1.60934 = 483 sec = 8:03/mi

min/mile to min/km

To go the other way, divide by 1.60934 (or multiply by 0.62137, which is the inverse). One kilometer is shorter than a mile, so the min/km number is always smaller.

min/km = min/mile / 1.60934

Example: 8:00/mi = 480 sec / 1.60934 = 298 sec = 4:58/km

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply your min/km pace by 1.60934. For example, if you run 5:00 per kilometer, multiply 5 minutes (300 seconds) by 1.60934 to get 483 seconds, which is 8:03 per mile. The converter on this page does this math instantly. For a quick mental estimate, multiply by 1.6 and add a few seconds.

How do I convert min/mile to min/km?

Divide your min/mile pace by 1.60934. For example, if you run 8:00 per mile, divide 8 minutes (480 seconds) by 1.60934 to get 298 seconds, which is 4:58 per kilometer. Alternatively, multiply by 0.62137. For a quick mental estimate, multiply by 0.6 and add a bit.

Why do runners use different pace units?

Runners in the United States, United Kingdom, and a few other countries traditionally use miles. Most of the rest of the world uses kilometers. Race distances add to the confusion: a 5K is measured in kilometers, but many American runners train in miles. If you travel for races or follow international training plans, you will need to convert regularly.

What is a good pace in min/km for a beginner?

A good beginner pace is 6:00 to 8:00 per kilometer (9:39 to 12:52 per mile). The most important thing for beginners is to run at a conversational pace, meaning you can speak in full sentences without gasping. If you are new to running, do not worry about your pace. Focus on time on feet and consistency.

Is 5:00 per km a good pace?

A 5:00/km pace (8:03/mile) is a solid recreational running pace. It translates to a 25:00 5K, a 50:00 10K, or roughly a 1:45 half marathon. For many runners, this is a comfortable long run or easy run pace. For others, it is a goal pace for their first race. Context matters more than absolute numbers.

What is the quickest way to convert km pace to mile pace in my head?

Multiply by 1.6 and round up slightly. For 5:00/km: 5 times 1.6 equals 8 minutes, so the answer is approximately 8:03/mile (the extra 3 seconds accounts for the 0.00934 we rounded off). For 4:30/km: 4.5 times 1.6 equals 7.2 minutes, which is 7:12/mile (actual is 7:14). Close enough for training purposes.
