How Pace Conversion Works
Running pace and speed are two sides of the same coin. Pace measures time per unit of distance (minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer), while speed measures distance per unit of time (miles per hour or kilometers per hour). Runners prefer pace because it maps directly to race splits and workout targets.
The conversion between miles and kilometers uses the factor 1.60934. One mile equals 1.60934 kilometers. To convert min/mile to min/km, divide by 1.60934. To convert min/km to min/mile, multiply by 1.60934. To convert between pace and speed, divide 60 by the pace in minutes to get speed per hour, or divide 60 by speed to get pace.
Treadmill displays show speed rather than pace, which is why treadmill runners often need to convert. A treadmill set to 7.0 mph is running at 8:34 per mile or 5:19 per km. This converter handles every direction instantly so you never have to do the math in your head.

What is a good pace for beginner runners?
Most beginners run between 10:00 and 13:00 per mile (6:13 to 8:05 per km), which equals 4.6 to 6.0 mph. The best pace is one where you can hold a conversation comfortably. Speed improves naturally with consistent training.
