Conversion Formulas

For paces outside the chart range or when you need to do manual calculations. All formulas with worked examples.

min/mile to min/km

Formula

min/km = min/mile / 1.60934

Example

8:00/mi = 480s / 1.60934 = 298s = 4:58/km

min/km to min/mile

Formula

min/mile = min/km x 1.60934

Example

5:00/km = 300s x 1.60934 = 483s = 8:03/mi

min/mile to mph

Formula

mph = 60 / min/mile (decimal)

Example

8:00/mi = 60 / 8.0 = 7.50 mph

min/km to kph

Formula

kph = 60 / min/km (decimal)

Example

5:00/km = 60 / 5.0 = 12.00 kph

mph to min/mile

Formula

min/mile = 60 / mph

Example

7.5 mph = 60 / 7.5 = 8.00 = 8:00/mi

kph to min/km

Formula

min/km = 60 / kph

Example

12.0 kph = 60 / 12.0 = 5.00 = 5:00/km

How to Use This Chart

Set treadmill speed

Your training plan says "8:00/mile tempo." Look up 8:00/mi in the chart to see you need 7.50 mph on the treadmill.

Convert international training plans

Following a plan that uses min/km but you think in miles? Find the km pace and read across to get your mile pace.

Predict race finish times

Find your target pace and see the predicted 5K, 10K, half, and marathon times in the same row.

Compare with friends

Your running partner talks in min/km while you use min/mile. Use this chart to speak the same language.

Beyond Pace Tracking

Every Pace Captures Real Territory

Pace numbers on a chart are useful. Pace numbers that capture territory on a real map are motivating. Motera tracks your running pace with full GPS accuracy, and every run claims ground on a live map. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use a pace conversion chart?

Find your current pace in any column (min/mile, min/km, mph, or kph) and read across the row to see the equivalent values in all other units. For example, if your GPS watch shows 8:00/mile, look at that row to see it equals 4:58/km, 7.50 mph, and 12.07 kph. You can also use the search box at the top to quickly find a specific pace.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace measures time per unit of distance (minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer). Speed measures distance per unit of time (miles per hour or kilometers per hour). They are inversely related: a faster pace means a lower number (fewer minutes per mile), while a faster speed means a higher number (more miles per hour). Runners typically use pace because it is easier to plan race splits and training sessions.

How do I convert min/mile to mph?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes. For example, an 8:00/mile pace means 60 divided by 8 equals 7.5 mph. For a 7:30/mile pace, convert to decimal first (7.5 minutes), then divide: 60 / 7.5 = 8.0 mph. For a 9:15/mile pace: 60 / 9.25 = 6.49 mph.

How do I convert min/km to kph?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometer. For example, a 5:00/km pace means 60 divided by 5 equals 12.0 kph. For a 6:30/km pace: 60 / 6.5 = 9.23 kph. This works the same way as the min/mile to mph conversion.

What pace do I need for a specific marathon time?

Divide your target time in minutes by 26.2 (miles) or 42.195 (kilometers). For a 3:30 marathon: 210 minutes / 26.2 = 8:01/mile (4:58/km). For a 4:00 marathon: 240 / 26.2 = 9:09/mile (5:41/km). The chart on this page shows predicted finish times for every pace.

What speed setting on a treadmill corresponds to my outdoor pace?

Treadmills in the US display speed in mph. Use the mph column in this chart to find the matching pace. For example, setting 7.0 mph on the treadmill equals about 8:34/mile (5:20/km). Setting 6.0 mph equals 10:00/mile (6:13/km). Note that treadmill running feels slightly easier than outdoor running because there is no wind resistance.

Why does this chart go from 5:00/mi to 15:00/mi?

This range covers virtually all runners, from competitive club racers (5:00/mi pace for 5K) to beginning walkers/joggers (15:00/mi). Paces faster than 5:00/mi are rare outside of elite competition, and paces slower than 15:00/mi are typically walking pace. If you need a pace outside this range, use the conversion formulas provided below the chart.
