Alpine village trail running with mountain bike trails, summit ridges, and high country views above the snowline.

Trail Running in Mount Buller

Mount Buller transforms from ski resort to trail running destination from November through to April, with over 60 km of marked trails winding through alpine ash forest, along exposed summit ridges, and past the high-country huts of the Victorian Alps. The ski resort infrastructure means well-maintained trails with clear signage, vehicle-free running roads, and facilities including showers and cafes at the village summit. The Great Alpine Road approach from Mansfield provides a stunning 50-minute drive through cattle country and mountain scenery, and the resort's elevation of 1804m ensures cool temperatures even on Victoria's hottest summer days.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Mount Buller open for trail running?

The trail running season runs from approximately November through to April when the snow has cleared. The resort is operational year-round but winter months are ski season with most trails snow-covered.

Do I need to pay to run at Mount Buller?

A resort entry fee applies to vehicles accessing the resort village. The fee covers use of resort facilities. Some trails on the lower mountain outside the resort boundary are accessible without paying the resort entry.

How hard is the Mount Buller Summit Circuit?

The Summit Circuit is 8 km with 350m of elevation gain along exposed alpine ridgeline terrain. It is rated challenging due to rocky surfaces, altitude at 1804m, and the effect of alpine weather. Fit trail runners complete it in 55 to 75 minutes.

Is Mount Buller good for mountain biking and trail running together?

Yes. Mount Buller has one of Australia's best mountain bike trail networks, and many trails are shared with runners in summer. Hikers and runners have right of way, but be aware of fast bike traffic on shared trails, particularly descending.

What are the major trail running events at Mount Buller?

The Mount Buller Trail Running Festival in February offers 10K, 20K, and 42K distances. Run Buller in December provides a season-opening event with 5K to 25K options. Both are well-organised and highly recommended for alpine running experiences.
